Anna Bigham

director

A lifelong lover of Shakespeare, Anna Bigham is a process-based director with a love of classical texts and an emphasis on movement practice in rehearsal.

I emphasize actor collaboration, textual clarity, and exploration in a devising and Viewpoints-inspired process. I love working with unconventional concepts and settings that allow classic texts to shine, and my goal is to create accessible performances that engage and entertain.

Productions

King Lear

Co-directed with Cece Richardson, Streetlight Shakespeare Ensemble's King Lear utilized five actors and 90 minutes to tell an Appalachian Gothic version of Shakespeare's classic tragedy. This production emphasized moments of care in one of the bleakest plays in the canon, drawing a contrast between extreme violence and everyday relationships.

"[T]he audience was invited to sit in communion with the five-person cast, bearing witness to horrors and loss, but perhaps also sharing their characters’ burdens." - Dr. Peter Kirwan, The Bardathon

A KING AND NO KING

This production of King and No King, co-directed with Ashley Wright, took Beaumont and Fletcher's tragicomedy on a George Lucas inspired galactic adventure. Playing off of the classic and confusing dynamic between Luke and Leia Skywalker, our take on this rarely-performed play was full of lightsabers, aliens, and awkward kisses.

"[T]he kinds of silliness that this production leaned into ... stem from a place of deep creative intelligence."
"[T]he production’s playful references allow it both to laugh at the source play and also to tell it with unusual clarity." - Dr. Peter Kirwan, The Bardathon
